The value of a memory test tends to be clear in situations where a person is experiencing cognitive concerns. But if you are not worried about your memory, you may have never considered participating in a memory screening.

What is a memory screening?

A memory screening is a simple test that exams several areas of cognitive functioning, such as short-term memory, language skills, and thinking. Memory screenings are typically administered by healthcare professionals and take only a few minutes to perform. While memory screenings cannot diagnose the exact cause of memory impairment, the results can identify those individuals in need of more comprehensive cognitive assessments.

Is memory loss normal with age?

Many older adults become concerned when they begin to experience forgetfulness. Misplaced keys and the occasional forgetting of an appointment or social activity can happen more frequently as we age. Forgetfulness can be a normal part of aging and does not necessarily indicate the onset of dementia.

When should I be concerned about my memory?

Concern should be raised when memory problems begin to interfere with everyday life. Difficulty performing familiar tasks, such as driving, paying bills, or meal preparation is a sign of a more serious memory disorder. Signs that an evaluation with your doctor is needed, include:

• Getting lost in familiar places
• Having trouble following simple or familiar instructions
• Becoming confused about time, people, and location
• Asking the same questions over and over again
• Having repeated difficulty finding the right words or understanding their meaning
• Changes in self-care, such as eating poorly or not bathing
• Behaving in an unsafe manner or exhibiting poor judgment
